I had started out writing this post with a joke about pumpkin spiced everything this time of year but honestly, it just doesn’t feel right in light of all that is happening with the world. My heart is so heavy for the people of Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and everyone that feels less than or afraid everyday single day simply because of the color of their skin or their gender or who they choose to love. Sometimes it seems silly to write about things like baked goods when there are so many more important things we could be talking about. As I thought more about how to start this post, I realized that food is often a comfort – and not just in the eating of it. Food, for me, is so often about community. People coming together to share a meal and fellowship is one of the great joys and comforts of my life and I think community and comfort are things we can all use right now. With that in mind, I’m going to write about pumpkin bread today. And then I’m going to make a good cup of tea and sit down with those I love and eat. …

Pumpkin Pecan Scones
It’s pumpkin season, friends. This versatile little squash is probably best known for the eponymous seasonal latte and as a fall decoration, but I love to bake with it. From my Mother-in-law’s famous pumpkin bread to our pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin is a key ingredient in so many of my fall and winter recipes. This week I’m sharing our new recipe for Pumpkin Pecan Scones.

Bailey’s Bread Pudding
There’s something about the turn of the season that really makes me crave comfort foods for brunch. Or dessert. Or, really, just all the time (if I’m being honest). This Bailey’s Bread Pudding is the perfect make ahead comfort food for fall. Or winter. Or a random Saturday when you really need some carbs.

Our Bailey’s Bread Pudding is a one dish, dump it and forget it type of treat. It’s fantastic for a lighter dessert and also really great addition to brunch. I suggest topping it with fresh berries and some sweetened whipped cream (or try our Bailey’s whipped cream to really do it right!).
…Pumpkin Ricotta Pancakes
I feel like I should have titled this blog post “confessions of a food blogger” because I’m about to let you in on a dirty little secret. Are you ready? Here it goes: I am the parent of a picky eater. A really picky eater. Yes, that is correct. This food blogging mama has a little one who will barely eat anything resembling real food. She is my two year old, blonde, sassy little bit of dynamite who has a definite mind of her own, especially when it comes to food. She essentially has five approved foods: cheese, yogurt, bread, scrambled eggs, and pancakes. Anything outside those groups is almost guaranteed to be refused and so I’ve had to get creative in my cooking. I developed these Pumpkin Ricotta Pancakes to try and sneak a little protein into my girl’s favorite breakfast. Our whole family loved them and I thought you might, too!
Quick Glazed Orange Bread
Quick Glazed Orange Bread is the treat you’ve been looking for! I made it again for my kids this weekend and then decided you might all want to make it as a treat for your kids. Or your significant other. Or make it for yourself. (what a gift!)
But if you’re making it for yourself, you may want to have someone else hide half of it where you can’t find it so you don’t eat all of it in one sitting. Or do eat all of it in one sitting. Trust me, we won’t judge.
After all, after you taste it, we know you’ll want to.

Halloween Caramel Corn
Hello, friends. It’s been a while. How are you?

How I’m Prepping For Thanksgiving
The holiday season is fast approaching. Believe it or not, Thanksgiving is now less than two weeks away. Time to get those holiday meal plans in place so that when game day comes, you can relax and enjoy the time with friends and family instead of running around like crazy. Today on the blog, I’m sharing How I’m Prepping for Thanksgiving and we’ve got a free, downloadable PDF to help you prep, too!

Good Food Reads: A Fall Friday Five
There is something so cozy and wonderful about fall. All those perfect, crisp days filled with changing leaves and sunshine are the stuff of instagram dreams, right? Well, admittedly today is a bit of a bummer weather wise (it’s cool and rainy here in Minnesota), but the forecast is looking up and I’m diving into my fall favorites for this week’s Good Food Reads: Fall Friday Five. Come along!…
Good Food Reads
Thanksgiving, for me, is always such a great mix of traditional foods and new recipes that push the envelope of classics just a little. In our house, no Thanksgiving is complete without Dixie Pie (find the recipe here) or my mother in law’s pumpkin bread. There is always turkey*, of course, and the traditional sides. Because of distance and job requirements, my husband and I alternate years with our extended family so our food traditions are a little different each fall! While each family does a great job of trying to incorporate those “must have” dishes to make Thanksgiving really feel like home, we also love having something different to look forward to each year. I like to try a twist on a classic side dish each year and with that in mind, I have pulled together a list of Good Food Reads for your upcoming Thanksgiving. You won’t find any traditional turkey or sweet potato recipes here – I trust you have plenty of sources for those – but there are plenty of recipes for classics that push the envelope just a bit. Here’s to a happy and tasty Thanksgiving!…
Good (Food) Reads
Well, it’s Wednesday, and time for another batch of good (food) reads. Here in the blustery midwest, we are digging out after our first real snowstorm of the year. The blizzard conditions made travel a bit anxiety provoking, but also made cozying up inside with a good book and comfort foods (give me all the carbs!) even more appealing than usual. On days like this, I love a piping hot cup of Aveda’s Comforting Tea and a slice of earthy, slightly spiced pumpkin bread (recipe coming soon to the blog!). What are your snow day favorites?
It may be a few days beyond meatless monday, but these Cauliflower Steaks with Romesco sauce look CRAZY good. Using chickpeas instead of bread to thicken the romesco is genius!
Speaking of bread, this Panzanella with Winter Squash and Sage, is next on my list. I had always thought panzanella was a summer-time only dish, with it’s heavy reliance on bright and fresh tomatoes, but this recipe uses roasted squash instead. Bring on the carbs!
Mardi Gras kicks off in one week! Do any of you make King Cake? NPR has a great article on the history of the king cake and all of it’s pop-culture permutations.
And because winter is the season for roasted everything, do yourself a favor and check out this piece from The Splendid Table featuring Michael Ruhlman talking about roasting. I particularly love the bit about testing your oven with Pillsbury biscuits! LOVE. Mostly because it’s an excuse to eat those totally-processed-but-oh-so-delicious weird little dough balls…
Take advantage of all the amazing winter citrus right now and make these Crunchy Chicken Spring Rolls with Blood Orange Dipping Sauce. Please. Thank me later.
Speaking of citrus, Heartbeet Kitchen featured Roasted Citrus Bowls with Honey Mascarpone and I almost drooled on my computer. Please go check it out. And while you’re there, someone convince me to get over my beet aversion and make these Fermented Beets. They are so pretty! (And I love pickles and they’re just like pickles, right? Right)
Finally, if you’re itching for some of the Avedea tea I mentioned and you want to try a DIY version, here’s a recipe from Wisdom and Honey. I think my next trip to the co-op will be in search of licorice root.
Until next week….
