I’ve been doing a lot of waxing poetic recently. Maybe it’s the recent college visits for my daughter, maybe it’s being in my mid forties, maybe it’s the impending winter (sigh.). Maybe it’s that since Daylight Savings Time last weekend, it gets dark by 5pm (ugh!). Whatever it is, I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about what brings me comfort and how to find it. So let’s talk about finding comfort. Maybe these can help you too!
Finding comfort is a funny thing. It can be a person, a place, an object. It can be a word or a song. And as someone who spends a lot of time in an ER, surrounded with so much discomfort, if there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that often the most simple things provide the most comfort.

So let’s talk about finding comfort.
ONE: A cup of tea. As everyone that knows me well, knows I don’t like warm beverages. I drink cold press coffee and iced tea year round. But when the winter comes, and I’m tired and needing a quick pick me up, I turn to this tea. And although I embrace the caffeinated version, it does come in a decaf version too. You know, in case you like to sleep. And ever since I bought this electric tea kettle, it takes me less than 2 minutes to make the perfect cup of tea.
TWO: A cozy blanket. There is nothing like wrapping up in a cozy blanket to give you a sense of comfort. This cozy blanket is one of my favorites. And the company, All the Feels Co, is dedicated to giving to nonprofits serving youth in need. Not only will you be comforted, you will be giving comfort as well!
THREE: A good book. You know we are both huge readers. And there is nothing more comforting than getting lost in a good book. My favorites for getting lost are this one , this one, and this one. And if you happen to get lost in your favorite epic novel while wrapped up in a blanket, sipping a cup of tea…well, then you are clearly getting the idea! (Want more posts about what we’re reading? FOUR: Time with friends. I am so fortunate to have a great circle of ride or dies. These gals are there no matter what. And although life has been crazy busy lately with full time jobs, kids, blogging, (you get the picture), I’m never too busy to carve out time with these gals. And as I can totally be myself with them, without judgement, I always leave with a full tank. Find your tribe and hold them close.
FIVE: This song. I brought my daughter to the James Bay concert at a historic theater in Minneapolis last fall. Turns out it was one of my favorite concerts of all time. Intimate setting, amazing crowd, fantastic voice. So I went home and started listening to the James Bay station on Pandora while cooking and blogging. That is where I was introduced to this song by Calum Scott. Although this song is about this artist coming out to his parents, it is applicable to everyone who just wants to feel acceptance and unconditional love for being who they are -whoever that may be. And as a mother, all I have to say is that I cry everytime I listen to this song. Every Time. Because we all love our kids “No Matter What”. The ultimate comfort is acceptance and unconditional love. Spend time with those who give it and spread it everywhere you can.
I’ll leave you with the video for this song. Feel it. Pledge to accept everyone no matter what. We’ll wait.
