I’m ready to be back blogging and am excited about a brand new year. I’m excited to bring you new recipes and talk about food and lifestyle, and Holly plans on joining us just as soon as her schedule allows. But first: a little reality. This pandemic is a large part of why we were not blogging as usual this summer (along with my medication misadventures: see post here). We need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. The weight that made my heart too heavy to sit down and concentrate on editing food photos and testing recipes. I felt like my mind was constantly whirling…which to be fair, I guess it was. So maybe we should talk about it. We should talk about life as an emergency physician during a pandemic (which is almost identical to the life of any healthcare professional-from the nurses to the techs to the pharmacists to the social workers to the EMS providers).
…What We Love: Community Supported Agriculture
One of the greatest parts of this summer is my Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box. I look forward every week to the day we pick up our box of fresh vegetables from our local coffee shop. My favorite are the weeks when we’re headed to the cabin and I challenge myself to use the vegetables in new and different ways (since there I have the time to experiment with new recipes). Every week I try to use every last vegetable and herb in our meal plan for the week. Interested in learning about Community Supported Agriculture? Read on…
…I’m Sorry. I’m Listening. I’m Learning.
For those of you who keep track, yes, it is my week to post a recipe. And I promise next week I will do so. But this week, as we remember George Floyd and all of the others before him, our friends and colleagues are badly hurting, my beautiful Minneapolis is burning, the National Guard is walking the streets, I just figured we had bigger things to talk about then what to have for dinner. And when I am feeling big emotions I write. Maybe my words will help someone else see what needs to be done. Or at least give you a starting point in the conversation this country needs to have on race.
…The 5 Cookbooks That are Getting Me Through Quarantine.
Quarantine cooking is a strange beast. I feel like I’ve made somewhere just short of one million meals, and I may not be too far off in my guesstimate. All of the sudden all of my family is around. All of the time. And hungry. All of the time. I’m trying to figure out new and flavorful dishes to serve that won’t take up all of my time or call for ingredients that I can’t find. Yet, it’s actually a great time for learning new techniques and trying new recipes. I’ve done a deep dive into my collection of cookbooks. These five cookbooks are the five cookbooks that I am spending lots and lots of time with these days.
…Quarantine Distractions: Vol. 1
It’s the end of April and, sadly, we’re still knee deep in the land of social distancing, shut downs, and home haircuts (ouch). There are some wonderful things about this slower season of life largely at home. And there are some really stressful things, too. In the midst of it all, I’m continuing to look each day for the little things to lighten the days. Need some fun inspiration for your quarantine day? Read on for my current favorites in Quarantine Distractions: Vol. 1.
…Quarantine 2020: Lessons from my Sourdough Starter
Quarantine. Social Distancing. Covid-19. All words I would be 100% happy to NEVER hear again. But here we are. And I personally don’t think this is going to be truly “over” anytime soon. As we are all facing great stress, both at home and at work, I have chosen to focus on welcome distractions. Like my Sourdough Starter. Turns out it has had some great lessons to teach.
…An Update Along With Some Information on How to Help.
As most of you know we are both Emergency Physicians. And right now we’re a little preoccupied with this crazy little virus called COVID-19 (Coronovirus ). It’s time to hunker down in your house and cook all of those great foods you’d been wanting to make! But things are changing rapidly and many people have asked how to help.

…Friday Five: Coffee Talk
This post is actually going to be a combination of what I’ve learned but even more than that I’m asking for your suggestions! As many of you know, I used to be a Diet Coke addict (drinking up to 12 cans per day). When I quit almost 2 years ago (cold turkey-yay!) I needed to switch up my drink game because although I’m growing to love water, it’s not always enough. Shortly after leaving the Diet Coke behind, I did what I probably should have done when knee deep in residency all those years ago- I took up coffee! Join us for this Friday Five’s Coffee Talk-all about cold brew coffee.
…Friday Five: Let Us Give Thanks (A Love Letter)
Thanksgiving is upon us and I have to admit, this is my absolutely FAVORITE holiday! A full day committed to giving thanks, good food, and family gets my vote any day of the week. The entire month of November always makes me stop and think about all of those things in my life that I have to be grateful for. So here are my thoughts on gratitude this year and all of the things that I will give thanks for!
