I got the sweetest text last month. One of my friends told me that her eight year old daughter was wondering “if that girl who makes really good cake” could come over and bake with her over the Christmas holiday. And when asked what she wanted to make, the answer was German Chocolate Cake. Yep, sounded good to me! This post chronicles their (super fun) day. The food isn’t styled, the lighting isn’t perfect, there was no thought given to composition, but hopefully it encourages you to get your own kids into the kitchen. It’s amazing what they can create!
When I got this text, I was really flattered. “That girl who makes really good cake” was my fourteen year old daughter. She had made a Lemon Blueberry Bundt Cake that we had brought over for a dinner a few months previously and evidently my friend’s daughter had really enjoyed it. Sounded like a fun way to spend an afternoon. My daughter agreed without hesitation.
But German Chocolate Cake? Neither of us had ever made a german chocolate cake. So we did what any good cook would do. A little research. (And we bought the ingredients to make the Lemon Blueberry Bundt Cake also-we knew we’d at least have one tried and true winner.)
We found a great recipe and let the girls go to it. I sat in my friend’s kitchen to “supervise” (this really meant drinking a lot of Diet Coke and some great chatter). My daughter walked her new friend through the steps to produce a great cake. The girls measured and stirred. They layered and frosted.
They produced a masterpiece. Moist cake. Delicious frosting full of coconut and pecans. We all agreed it was sensational. But more than that two girls bonded over some kitchen time. As a mom who loves to cook, I couldn’t be more proud of that. My heart is full.
The recipe we used (and you should too!) is The Best Ever German Chocolate Cake by Dash of Sanity. It definitely lived up to it’s name!
